This week's lecture covered a number of communication topics:
- 'Shannon-Weaver Communication Model' which places an emphasis on the 6 must-have elements of a communication process: source, encoder, message, channel, decoder and receiver.
- Semiotics: the signifier and the signified.
- Representation: iconic, indexical and symbolic signs.
There is an emphasis on the iconic and indexical types of representation. Students were also given an in-class assignment in which we had to create iconic and indexical signs of one object. The class was divided into groups of 2 students working on the same object. My friend and I chose 'BEAR' as our object.
- Iconic: the real bear is represented by the simplified bear outline; the bear outline is iconic since it resembles the bear's real shape.
- Indexical: the bear's footstep is representative of the bear; the footstep is indexical since it does not look like a bear but is indicative of a bear.
